The Brecon Beacons Park SocietyThe Brecon Beacons Park Society is an independent, 600-member registered charity that exists for everyone who cares about the Brecon Beacons National
Park. Society members are people who enjoy its varied and beautiful landscapes, wish to enhance and protect its amenities and want to know more about
its past, present and future.
The aim of the Society is to promote the enhancement, protection and conservation of the Park in ways that benefit the public. The members aim to be
the eyes, ears and mouthpiece of residents, visitors and all who have the National Park's interests in mind.
The Society will lobby, and where necessary campaign, on matters that affect the Park with the Park Authority and other statutory bodies and with the
Welsh Assembly Government.
The management of the Society is overseen by an Executive Committee, which consists of up to fifteen elected members. It meets at least eight times a
year and oversees all the Society's activities and interests. Committee members are regularly consulted by other organisations on such matters
as: Rights of Way, Planning, Development Control, Policy issues and Management problems within the National Park.
The Park Society produces what is generally acknowledged to be one of the finest Guided Walks Programmes in the United Kingdom.
Aimed principally at its members and friends, the Society’s programme of some 160 walks per annum caters for the accomplished hill-walker as well as
offering a number of less strenuous outings with historical, cultural, environmental or geological themes. Non-members are welcomed but asked to offer
a small donation, when appropriate.
A varied monthly programme of Special Events is offered and will normally include lectures, demonstrations, short walks, exhibitions and illustrated
talks all relevant to the National Park ethos.
The Brecon Beacons Park Society produces a twice yearly members' magazine called 'The Beacon’ which contains a variety of articles,
conjecture, letters, photographs and opinion on National Park issues.
A 'Newsletter’ is also circulated to members, every six months which features short news items, reports from Executive members and advance
notices of forthcoming attractions.
The Society has also devised an eight-day long-distance (161 kilometre,101 mile) linear walk across the National Park called 'The Beacons Way’. A
guide book has been compiled and published and the National Park Authority has adopted it as their ‘Official Trail’
The Park Society organizes regular Navigation Courses for hill walkers at a basic and more advanced level. Covering map-reading, route planning and
compass and GPS skills, the courses attract some 60 participants each year.
The Society has a very active web-site which contains information on: Guided Walks, Special Events, The Society itself, Campaigns and Issues, Society
News, The Brecon Beacons National Park, The Beacons Way, Navigation Courses and also displays several articles from ‘The Beacon’ magazine.
