Pedal Harder....

Cycling is good for you – and this is the ideal playground for bike enthusiasts! Something of a Mecca for mountain bikers, the Brecon Beacons also harbour some fantastic rides for families and leisure cyclists. And don't worry if you are a cycling softie - you don't need to go off-road or up a mountain to enjoy the views and relish the fresh air, and you'll have no trouble finding a good meal and a comfy bed at the end of the day.

Drover Holidays offers a range of cycling services, from a half day bike hire to an eight-day epic from one end of Wales to the other. Either visit the hire shop in Hay on Wye, or take advantage of the free delivery service (within 20 miles of Hay). Discover the Wye Valley, tire your kids out on traffic-free trails, or enjoy an easy introduction to riding tandem with your partner. Special rates for families and groups, with bikes, routes and maps to suit all ages and tastes. Tailor made weekend packages, including accommodation and train travel from London, also available. Contact Anna Heywood on 01497 821134 for enquiries and bookings.

Want to exercise your right to roam? No problem. You needn't retrace your wheel tracks or restrict yourself to a circular route here. Ride & Hike, based in Brecon, offers a pick-up and drop-off service, and with a 6-seater minibus and a 6-bike trailer, their service is perfect for cyclists wanting to ride a linear route. You could arrange to be dropped off at a high-point and enjoy freewheeling all the way back down! Contact Annie Lawrie on 07971 527660 for information about this service.

Conveniently located in the center of Brecon, Castle Street Restaurant with Rooms is another excellent option for cyclists, with a secure lock-up and a warm welcome. Though a grade II listed townhouse with a touch of luxury, muddy cyclists are welcome and this is an ideal overnight stop for those cycling the Taff Trail or the Lon Las Cymru. Castle Street restaurant, meanwhile, serves delicious meals made using fresh, local ingredients. And thanks to all those calories you will have burned up on the bike, you can tuck into puddings like the fairtrade Banana Caramel Cheesecake without a hint of guilt! Accommodation from £45 per night for a double room. Mains from £9.00, veggie and vegan meals, organic wines and Welsh beers available. Packed lunches made to order. Get in touch with Carolyn Sharples on 01874 624392 for info on both the rooms and restaurant.

So what are you waiting for? Saddle up and settle in to cycling in the Brecon Beacons.
